Message from the Secretary 08/20/21
Hi Members:
It’s been a wet, hot, slow summer at the club. The unusual amount of rainfall in July caused flooding in the sporting clays fields and even the sidewalks to the clubhouse were inches deep in water for a couple of days. This necessitated the cancellation of a registered sporting clays shoot, but through the hard work of our outstanding staff we were able to keep most of our operations open. We have held our other regularly scheduled events, but open shooting has remained slow. Talking to members, we believe this is a result of the rain, the heat and mostly the continued difficulty in finding ammunition and reloading supplies. We have recent reports from members, however, that ammo is getting to be a little more plentiful and easier to find for those willing to put in the time to search for it. Our inventory at the club remains pretty slim, but those hitting up the big retail sources are having more success. Frequent trips to Academy and Walmart reportedly yield the best results.
Around the club: if you’ve been out recently you’ve noticed some heavy equipment on the premises. We have renovated and added on to our water system installing safety cut-off valves in case of emergency and additional spigots for irrigation and future projects. We are also installing new drainage pipes and working on surface drainage. Ironically the rainy weather that delayed progress of this project helped highlight problem areas that could be addressed. With the equipment there we have also been able to take out dead foliage, relocate some trees and plant new ones as well as do some general landscaping.
Upcoming Events: this Saturday 8/21/21 we will hold the Tropical Challenge registered sporting clays shoot. Sunday 8/22/21 Coastal Bend Shooters will hold a falling steel match. If you are interested in either event you can find more information on our website or by contacting the clubhouse. New participants are encouraged and there are lots of experienced shooters happy to show you the ropes. September has many shooting opportunities with two CBS matches, a steel challenge match and two sporting clays fundraiser shoots. We should note that two sporting clays fundraising events have been cancelled in September at the discretion of the organizations holding them because of the rise of Covid-19 cases in the county. We recommend that you check the calendar frequently to make sure any event you are interested in is still being held, and to see if previously cancelled events have been rescheduled.
Urgent: it’s less than 3 months until we’ll be holding our annual meeting and election of board members. As most of you know we have 9 directors on the board, and each year 3 positions come open for 3-year terms. Per our bylaws, we must have at least 6 candidates on the ballot. If you would like to participate in decisions about your club that will affect not only our current practice but also plans that will go far into the future, we are asking that you please consider running for the board. If you are interested, please contact me, Craig or Theresa for any questions and an eligibility form.
If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please feel free to contact me at denisenewton@live.com or a member of management at ccgc@gtek.biz or 361-852-1212. If you have tried emailing me before and I didn’t answer, I apologize, I found a filter sending emails to my “junk mail.” I will try to respond to all emails. See you at the club!
